History of Parkway

On Tuesday, August 7, 1962 our first pastor, Robert Humbertson, officially organized the Park Road Church of God congregation with 107 members on the campus of the Church of God Smoky Mountain Children's Home in Sevierville, Tennessee. The new congregation soon built a church facility on the Children’s Home campus with the address of 440 Parkway, which is how our congregation came to be known as “Parkway Church of God.” Initially, the congregation was almost exclusively comprised of children from the Home and personnel working at the Home.

As years went by, more and more people from the surrounding community also became involved in the life of our congregation. On Friday, May 9, 2008 our congregation purchased a church property just across the river from the Children’s Home campus. This property had formerly been owned by Evergreen Church (PCA) and had been sold to New Hope Church of God. The New Hope congregation graciously sold us this property located at 661 Parkway for a greatly reduced price.

In August of 2012, our congregation celebrated fifty years of ministry! To God be the glory! As we celebrated our heritage, we also looked forward to the future that we knew God had for our congregation in coming years, but we did not realize where the Lord would be taking us next.

On Thursday, December 12, 2013 our congregation signed a lease/purchase agreement with Ron and Betty Ogle to purchase the church property located at 1103 Dolly Parton Parkway in Sevierville. This church facility was originally built by New Hope Church of God and was later purchased by Evergreen Church (PCA) before being sold to the Ogles. The Parkway congregation had their first service at the new location on Sunday, February 23, 2014!

The purchase of this new property was completed on December 30, 2014 and dedicated to the Lord at our Dedication Celebration on April 26, 2015!
